This is cute and I’ll probably go to one of these dates, but none of these shows are going to compare to their record release show in London.
POZ Show Review: Matt Pryor, Allison Weiss - European Tour
by Zac Lomas, edited by Erik van Rheenen
There is something intrinsically unassuming about The Borderline. Tucked into an alley off of a nondescript thoroughfare in the London neighborhood of Soho, which was once lauded by Londoners as the most decadent section of the metropolitan area, this small and intimate basement venue offered the perfect adopted home for Allison Weiss and Matt Pryor to take up shop. The simplicity of the space matched the simplicity of the show, with both stellar musicians wielding nothing more than an acoustic guitar and their voice.
London’s own Dirty Leaves opened the show as a one-man solo act, belting out whiskey-soaked bar ballads in a way that was eerily reminiscent of The Who’s Peter Townshend. Drew Elliot, the singer/songwriter behind the moniker, worked his way through a relatively short set with an obvious air of anxiety that contributed to the down to earth and genuine nature of his performance.
In the wake of Dirty Leaves, Allison Weiss donned the stage and awkwardly adapted her typical introduction by exclaiming: “I am Allison Weiss and I am a band called Allison Weiss!” Although Weiss has been the Queen of D.I.Y. musicianship for years, it was last year that saw her make her No Sleep Records debut with the full length LP Say What You Mean, which supplied every single song in her over half an hour set.
